Last year, we stood on the stage at Rock Retreat Run and read this script to a room filled with 175 women. Our intention was to shine a light on what resilience truly looks like.
Resilience, after all, is about showing up and getting back up.
We talked about how we so often downplay our strength and look right past all of things, moments and decisions that we’ve endured.
When we were done reading this script (below), there was not a dry eye in the room. We ourselves could barely read through our own tears. As we spoke these words out loud, women starting reaching for each other. First a hand, then a shoulder, then a hug, then simply holding each other up and becoming one collective story, together.
Since starting Fellow Flowers, it was hands down one of the most impactful moments I have ever experienced.
And since that day, many of the women in that room now feel differently about our rock star flower. And as we kick off its virtual run this week, it’s time to share that moment and these words with you as well.
Below is part of the unedited script from Rock Retreat Run.
ROCK RETREAT RUN – 11/3/17
Resilience Story + Meaning
MESSAGE – Together We Rise
…So today, we mirror back to all of you the strength, courage and resilience you have shown us over the years. All the times we have witnessed you get back up, make hard decisions, take one step forward and show up for yourself and others.
Honor who you are ladies. Honor how far you have come. These are our stories. These are your stories. As you hear each of these statements, we want you to know that we see you and you are not alone.
You made yourself a priority.
Celebrated a win.
Got the job.
Didn’t get the job.
The diagnosis that changed everything.
Traveled across the country to finally feel home.
Grieved the loss
of a child
of the ability to have a child
of a parent
of a friend
of the love of your life
of a dream.
Supported and loved an addict.
For a cause.
For a friend.
Forgave someone who was just doing the best they could.
Forgave yourself, because so were you.
Endured the injury that stole your ability.
Signed up even though you was scared.
Registered without knowing the next step.
Got the PR you worked your ass off for.
Decided it was time to begin again.
Got up before the sun – because you said you would.
Looked in the mirror and was proud of the woman you’ve become.
Overcame the eating disorder.
Finally lost the weight.
Didn’t listen to the voice that said ending it would be easier.
Got off the meds when you realized you didn’t need them anymore.
Said out loud, I need help.
Took a shower.
Got out of bed.
Got out the door.
Took the high road.
Chose love instead of judgment.
Didn’t yell at the kids.
Carried the friend when she thought she would break.
Showed up to the party.
Had the uncomfortable conversation.
Decided to stay.
Decided to leave.
Believed in yourself.
Found the courage.
Spoke your truth.
Decided to rise.
(Close + Pause)
Even as I type and read it again, it still hits me the same. After this session, I noticed a closeness amongst the women too. A sense of belonging. I’ll never forget it. It’s also the magic of our retreats – creating spaces where women can set aside expectations of what they should be and instead, simply just be.
Inspired by one of my dearest friends Tara, this flower – this rock star message – it holds so very much for this community. It’s a reminder that these aren’t just flowers that women wear in their hair or accessories for outfits. They are an expression of story, and they are words that light the way through our journey.
Thank you for letting me share this with you, and thank you for letting Fellow Flowers continue to be a small part of yours.
P.S. Registration for the rock star virtual run is live! The medal is stunning and the apparel is pretty darn cool too. If you want to check it out, the link is here. We do have about 50 free shipping spots remaining too – the code is ROCKSTAR at checkout.
