“Dreamer. To show grace and courage. To embrace the challenge and welcome new beginnings. Putting yourself out there. Doing it scared. I will run through the fear to feel the joy.”
The words and phrases written about each of our flowers all have a story behind them, many of which are inspired by our #FFOriginals. The phrase ‘do it scared’ from our beloved white flower is one of our favorite stories to share. Linda Ludwig, founder of LL Always and creator of the bracelets for the Dreamer Virtual Run, is the inspiration behind this powerful phrase. Her perspective on why its important to do things scared has become a go-to reason why so many women choose the white flower before a big training day, a race or defining life moment.
We asked Linda to talk about what ‘doing it scared’ means to her, as so much of her journey in running, entrepreneurship and chasing dreams has revolved around these three powerful words. (Read more on that here.) In reflecting on her journey, she offered five rules that have helped her along the way and will surely inspire you as well. In her words…
#1 Follow your gut feeling. Follow your voice. It will absolutely never let you down. The white flower is all about new beginnings and putting yourself out there.
#2 It is okay to shift gears or change your mind. So when life changes, you have to change too. When everybody is going one way up the stream, you have to roll with it. If not, it’s going to be really exhausting. Sometimes as women, I think, we need permission for someone to say that. Somehow we feel like it’s embarrassing or like someone is going to keep track of us, and honestly, no one really cares.
#3 Say yes. Life really is very, very short, and you don’t want any regrets. Honestly, whatever your goal is, whether it’s a goal of running or a goal of life, set it up, set it up with supports, and truly just go for it. You will not regret what you’ve ever tried. (Um, FYI, we have a print for this!)
#4 Perfection does not exist. My jewelry is metal stamps, so what that means is there’s no machinery involved. It’s metal stamps and a hammer. Every single piece is hand-stamped. No two pieces are alike, and I sometimes have a tough time with that. Again, perfection does not exist. If you wait, honestly you will never do anything, so just start.
#5 Whatever your success, gets your hands up and smile. At every single race—whether it’s a 5K or a marathon, whether you walk it or run it—you always want to get your hands up at the finish line and smile. Those little joys are going to lead to more things.
Linda sums it all up: “Be you. Put yourself out there. Do it scared. And absolutely no regrets.”
