When a woman inspires you… please tell her. It might just be the ONE thing she needs to remind herself of how far she’s come.
I’ve been swimming for just over a year now. Last year at this time, I still needed fins to get through my workouts, and I had to take breaks pretty often to catch my breath. My form was shaky (that’s being kind) and I choked on water ALL. OF. THE. TIME.
Flash forward to today. I was in the locker room after my laps and struck up a conversation with a young mom and her two sweet kids. We were talking about swim lessons and kids activities and she said, “Well, the way you looked out there, you could probably teach your kids swim lessons!”
OMGoodness. I nearly fainted. (WHAT DID SHE JUST SAY?)
“Oh Lord no. I just started swimming last year, and I still don’t know what the heck I’m doing.”
Apparently, she didn’t see the same woman I did. “You looked really strong. You should be really proud of yourself. I would have never known that.”
Then she looked at her kids and said, “See you guys… that’s what happens when you practice… eventually, you’ll be just like her.”
WWHAAAATTT???? LIKE ME????? (I seriously think I looked over my shoulder to see if there was some other woman she was referring to. What? ME? You’re talking about ME!!!???)
I looked at her and simply said, “Thank you. You have no idea what that means.”
She left with her sweet kiddos and as I finished getting ready, I started thinking about her kind words. In that moment I was reminded of the power we have to lift each other up, and more so, how incredibly SIMPLE it is to let other women know, ‘hey, I see you being brave over there and I just wanted to tell you it’s pretty awesome.’
One year later, I’m still in the slow lane, but today, I walked out of that locker room feeling like I’d just won an Olympic medal.
Which leads me to this message. Ladies, we have SO MUCH POWER in our words. Let’s remember them and build each other up…
If you see a woman being strong, bold and confident – TELL HER she’s inspiring you to do the same.
If you see a woman stepping outside of her comfort zone and doing it scared – TELL HER how proud you are of her effort.
If you see a woman making progress – day after hard earned day – TELL HER that you see it.
If you see a woman who is chasing her dreams – TELL HER to stay brave and keep going.
If you see a woman courageously attempt, fall short AND GET BACK UP to try again – TELL HER she’s your freaking hero.
If you see a woman who is choosing authenticity and realness over polished and perfect – THANK HER for giving you the courage to choose the same.
And yes, if you happen to find yourself at a local pool and see a woman who is swimming laps… with her fins on… taking breaks every 50 yards because she’s out of breath… looking like she doesn’t know what the heck she is doing… please, please tell her she’s doing awesome. Tell her not to quit. Tell her you’re proud of her. And tell her you can’t wait to see where she’ll be in a year 🙂
