Perfect Timing for a Challenge
I was diagnosed with Lymphoma- Stage 4 in June 2013 and had completed 5 rounds of chemotherapy. When I first saw the challenge posted, I was doing my maintenance treatments. I was intermittently running—with little purpose—just to get out for stress relief and for the health benefits. I’ve been a runner for about 7 years and always ran with a purpose, but at this particular moment in my life I felt very unorganized in all sorts of ways.
Declare It Day gave me a definitive challenge. To make a commitment! To run with purpose! To hold myself accountable! To let everyone know that I had a goal!
My 2014 DID goal was to run a Ragnar Race (Madison, WI to Chicago, IL) and to complete two half marathons. I now had a commitment and it was on paper! I had to train, make time and get out there. I conquered my goal and even completed a third half marathon! I ran with purpose and I had my husband (my newest running buddy), right beside me the entire time as my support crew.
Pushing Myself Further
What did I learn from my DID 2014 experience? I learned:
- That I can do anything I put my mind to, even though sometimes I need a little nudge.
- How important “together time” with my husband was (and still is). We’ve been together for 20 years!
- That I have the best running friends, at home and online, to support me in my personal journey.
- That I could push myself just a little bit further each time I did a long run.
- That every run didn’t need to be perfect, a personal best or even easy. I ran because I could!
I have two children, girls ages 10 and 12 and felt a need to be a good strong role model for them. I want my girls to know that they, too, can do anything they put their minds to.
Motivated for Declare It Day 2015
I am participating in DID 2015 on February 7, 2015 because I can! I believe that by challenging myself I become a better person. I love to read the stories of others, be supported and supportive in any way I can. I am approaching DID 2015 much like last year’s only with greater purpose! I was unable to be a part of the physical event last year, but am planning on being present for this year’s event. I am looking forward to meeting fellow runners and to have a great running year!
