Rachel Yohn was born and raised in rural Wisconsin. Growing up in a rural area, she always felt a connection to animals and a desire to help them so she followed her passion and became a veterinarian. Rachel prides herself on being just as compassionate and caring to her animal patients as she does their human owners as she knows each person’s pet is truly a cherished family member. Rachel started running nine years ago when she signed up for her first race ever- the Chicago Distance Classic Half Marathon. Running a half marathon was a life changing experience and she hasn’t stopped running since. This Mother’s Day Rachel has chosen to run the SHE Rocks Virtual Run in honor of her beloved Mother, who embraced every day of life with joy and gratitude until the very end.
She RULES because:
She rules because she has never stopped chasing her goals whether it be to follow her childhood dreams of becoming a veterinarian or her goal of running a half marathon. When Rachel puts her mind to something, she follows through no matter what obstacles are thrown her way.
Fellow Flowers has become a key source of support in helping Rachel conquer her goals and embrace her inner rock star. For her, it’s a welcome reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other even when times are tough. Rachel first heard of Fellow Flowers a year ago and was immediately drawn to the movement. She was inspired by the essence of what Fellow Flowers stood for – encouraging women to embrace who they are and celebrate every victory in life, whether it involved running shoes or not. Fellow Flowers reinforced a fiercely united bond that women innately shared and brought all types of women together to support each other – both their triumphs and pitfalls in both running and life. Fellow Flowers has held a special place in Rachel’s life ever since.
She ROCKS because:
She rocks because she has made the choice to strive to see the positive things in life. In 2012, Rachel’s mother passed away after years of battling a myriad of health concerns. Her Mom never gave up and always stayed positive. At any point she could have thrown in the towel and stopped fighting. But instead, she put one [prosthetic] foot in front of the other. She greeted each new challenge with determination and will power that still leaves Rachel in awe to this day. One of her greatest legacies is that she was always a positive person, long before her health concerns came about.
“Most people remember my Mom for her positive attitude in the midst of chaos; it was a unique and special gift she had. I was fortunate to know and witness the positive attitude my mom brought to every day of her life and I hope to do the same.“
Rachel will always admire her Mother’s positivity, determination and zeal for life. Honoring her Mother’s memory, Rachel is determined to bring the same will power and determination her Mom possessed everyday in running and in life.
“My Mother has inspired me to never give up, no matter what life throws my way.”
She RUNS because:
She runs because it clears her mind; at the end of a long day, running is the one thing that brings her peace. She loves knowing her only competition is herself – a type of mental toughness and meditation On any given day, even if she only has a small amount of time, she still chooses to run and knows she can decide how fast, long or difficult a run is going to be. Running is a sport that ebbs and flows just like everyday life, always providing a constant outlet.
“Losing my mom just over two years ago has been the most difficult thing I’ve ever faced. But when I read the words in the SHE Rocks Virtual Run, I knew I had to do it! To honor her. To remember her fighting spirit and to have a way to celebrate her on Mother’s Day.”
As not only her Mom but also her best friend, Rachel will honor her Mom by taking 6.2 miles to reflect on the amazing person she was and all she has given her.
“The SHE Rocks Virtual Run is a tribute to the special women in our lives who have touched us, changed us and molded us into who we are. I encourage every one to join me on Mother’s Day and run in honor of a special woman in your life who will always be your rock no matter what.”
Always filled with such joy, strength, courage and determination. When Rachel looks through the flowers, she knows her Mother would’ve worn so many of them with pride. She will lace up her shoes for the SHE Rocks Virtual Run and plans to put her Yellow Flower for “Authentic” in her hair because it always reminds her to embrace joy and happiness and to laugh as much as possible.
Who will you honor by running the SHE Rocks Virtual Run this Mother’s Day? (Psst…if you haven’t yet registered there are only about 50 spots left, so hurry and register today!).
