We’re halfway through our Declare It Day year – can you believe its been six months since we declared our goals together? At this point you may have crushed your goal, you may be feeling like you’re never going to meet your goal and you may just need some inspiration and support to remind you to keep going whether that means adding a new goal, adjusting your goal or just refocusing so you can get to that finish line and remember why you started!
What better way to be reinvigorated then to hear from some other Fellow Flowers on their goal crushing journeys to date?
Living As Your True Authentic Self by Holly
This was my very first Declare It Day. Myself along with six other incredible women gathered together to celebrate the importance of documenting and working towards our goals along with providing support for one another. I vividly remember my friend Kathy expressing one of her goals was to live as her true, authentic self. WOW! What can I say? That struck a cord deep in my heart and has been incorporated into my Declare It Day Goals as well (see below).
Declare It Day Goals:
1. Run at least one race per month
3. Live with intention; be mindful! Live with purpose on purpose! Aiming towards my north star! Live from the Heart!
“I’m doing it because: I want to become a better, stronger, healthier version of myself”.
Declare It Day Update:
I am THRILLED to say that I am right on track with all 3 of my goals. This year has been far different than previous years. I am ACTUALLY doing what I said I wanted to do. It feels invigorating to be literally moving forward in this way. So far I’ve done eight races in five months (six 5k’s, one 10k & one 15k) with a 5k (Seattle Race for the Cure) this coming Sunday followed by the Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on 06/13/15. I really did not know how much Declare It Day would impact my daily decisions resulting in meeting my goals. It’s been far from “perfect”, but I can say with a smile that I have been doing the best I can with what I have right where I am! The Declare It Day experience accompanied with my goals staring me straight in the face every day (I have my Declare It Day goals posted next to the bathroom mirror) has made a beautiful & lasting impact. On the tough days, you know, those days when you’d rather make excuses than take action? That’s when I stop myself, look at my goals along with pictures from Declare It Day and remember my ‘WHY’. I am beyond grateful for Fellow Flowers and the community it has provided. ANYTHING IS possible!
Hope Starts Here: Running 4 Ever 4 Brody by Tanya
Declare It Day Goal:
My goal was to run/walk a half marathon for the Hope Starts Here Challenge in Marquette on May 9th….to honor my four-year-old son Brody’s memory as brain cancer took his life 4/15/14.
Declare It Day Update:
Well, I more than crushed my goal – I RAN the entire half marathon and came in under 2 1/2 hours which was my secondary goal!! With a pink flower in my hair I ran for my son….because he couldn’t!
This year it was not easy to find a goal that met the “rules” of Declare it Day: challenging, a little bit out of my comfort zone…
With one distance goal (run a marathon) and one time goal (run a sub-2 half) in the last two years I needed something different. I thought about it for a couple of weeks, but could not figure out any running related goal that was fun and challenging at the same time. That is when I started running with a friend on her favorite route. While my go-to routes are fully flat her one was going uphill. I was totally out of breath when we reached the top after about 30 minutes of going more or less uphill. We stopped, took a picture with the city below us…and I realized that my goal needed to include going uphill.
So at our Declare It Day Party (which takes Fellow Flowers internationally as I live in Switzerland!) I declared to run a trail half. I had already decided which one, it was going to be the Swiss Alpine Half Marathon on July 25. That is a big event in Switzerland and the half is on a trail suitable for beginners, with 2000ft altitude to climb.
Declare It Day Update:
The first four months of the year were dedicated to marathon training. I did include some hills into my workouts, but the focus was on distance rather than altitude. After I recovered from the marathon the focus shifted to prepare for the half. I had to change running routes to get some altitude. One mid-week run was switched from the totally flat airport route to a slightly hilly forest route. Nothing too challenging, but I really felt the difference. Luckily my BRFs (best running friends) are with me wherever I run, so I had some company while getting a little bit lost in the forest. In addition, I changed my long run to include altitude. I found some beautiful routes and the view is always great.
I try not to look at pace, because I am quite a bit slower than I am used to. First this did bother me, but now I’m ok with it. The only thing I look at after the long run is how many feet I have climbed. Just a a couple weeks to go – looking forward to some more hilly training runs and crushing my goal.
