SHE Rocks, Rules, Runs: Honoring the Forever Bond of a Mother & Daughter

04/30/2015 by fellowflowers Leave a Comment

tntRachel Yohn was born and raised in rural Wisconsin. Growing up in a rural area, she always felt a connection to  animals and a desire to help them so she followed her passion and became a veterinarian. Rachel prides herself on being just as compassionate and caring to her animal patients as she does their human owners as she knows each person’s pet is truly a cherished family member. Rachel started running nine years ago when she signed up for her first race ever- the Chicago Distance Classic Half Marathon. Running a half marathon was a life changing experience and she hasn’t stopped running since. This Mother’s Day Rachel has chosen to run the SHE Rocks Virtual Run in honor of her beloved Mother, who embraced every day of life with joy and gratitude until the very end.

She RULES because:

She rules because she has never stopped chasing her goals whether it be to follow her childhood dreams of becoming a veterinarian or her goal of running a half marathon. When Rachel puts her mind to something, she follows through no matter what obstacles are thrown her way.

Fellow Flowers has become a key source of support in helping Rachel conquer her goals and embrace her inner rock star. For her, it’s a welcome reminder to keep putting one foot in front of the other even when times are tough. Rachel first heard of Fellow Flowers a year ago and was immediately drawn to the movement. She was inspired by the essence of what Fellow Flowers stood for – encouraging women to embrace who they are and celebrate every victory in life, whether it involved running shoes or not. Fellow Flowers reinforced a fiercely united bond that women innately shared and brought all types of women together to support each other – both their triumphs and pitfalls in both running and life. Fellow Flowers has held a special place in Rachel’s life ever since.

SHE Rocks, Rules, Runs: Never Giving Up & Inspiring Others

Siblings formed through adoption at Adoption Associates Inc.
Siblings formed through adoption at Adoption Associates Inc.

“Adoption. Years ago, this word did not have a lot of personal meaning. It was merely just a word in passing…letters on a page. Honestly, it brought about feelings of sympathy for children without “real” parents. How naive I had been…uninformed and oblivious to the unbelievable gift that adoption brings to so many. My, how my life has come full circle,” shared Nikki Racine.

Nikki Racine is the Director of Fund Development and Outreach at Adoption Associates, one of three charities the SHE Rocks Virtual Run benefits. She has held many titles in her life, from daughter, sister and wife, to attorney, race director and runner, but for her the one title that means the most is mom.

She RULES because:

Nikki and her family.

High school sweethearts, Nikki and her husband had worked hard to become the professions of their childhood dreams, her husband a physician and her an attorney, always standing by each other’s side.

SHE rules because after years and years of struggling to have a child of their own, she decided she wasn’t going to give up on their next life dream. Instead Nikki and her husband decided to explore the world of adoption.

“On May 6, 2011, our lives changed forever.  Our son, Amari Michael, entered this world.  He is from only 45 minutes away from where we live today.  His birth mother loved him so much that she knew she just couldn’t give him all that he needed. We are deeply grateful to her, and we honor her legacy and kept his given name.  “Amari” means “a miracle from God.”  He is our miracle.”

Today her title has expanded to include “Amari and Zane’s Mom.” Her second little miracle arrived home from Ethiopia on February 5, 2015.

Racing into Summer: Don’t Miss the HER Madison Half & 5K

04/24/2015 by fellowflowers Leave a Comment

Last summer, over coffee, two friends put their heads together and dreamed about creating the ultimate women’s race in Madison, WI. Jen Andersen, the director of operations for Capitol View Events, and Mel Charbonneau, co-founder of Fellow Flowers, knew each other from the racing and endurance communities and had become fast friends. Over this particular coffee date they wondered why there wasn’t a women’s only race in their area. Sure there were races and events nearly every weekend in Madison but none like the race they had in mind: A race just for women, a race where no one felt judged, one that was accessible and welcoming. Looking at the women attendance of the local races it was clear there was enough of a women’s presence –  so Jen took the matter into her own hands and created the HER Madison Half & 5K, taking place for the first time this June 25-28!

The HER Madison Half & 5K celebrates the courageous journey every woman experiences when running a race. This race is different because it focuses and acknowledges the last runner across the finish line just as much as the first. Every woman feels welcomed, encouraged and empowered. Running this race is an accomplishment and more importantly about the experience and transformation each and every woman goes through.

SHE Rocks, Rules, Runs: Finding Balance as a Mom of Four

04/23/2015 by fellowflowers Leave a Comment

unnamed-3She RULES because:

Anne Tully is a super stay-at-home mom of four kids ages 8, 6, 3 and 1 in Madison, WI. Running is (obviously!) what she does to stay sane and balanced.

She RULES because despite a hectic schedule and four kiddos, she continues to make running a priority because she knows taking time for herself to run makes her a better wife and mother.

Anne became involved with Fellow Flowers when Mel (co-founder of Fellow Flowers) moved in next door to her a year before she and Tori started the women’s running movement.

“I remember the first run of flowers and statements cards came three days before a race I was running. Mel gave me one of each flower and I wasn’t sure which one I’d wear until that morning, when I finally decided to to go with orange, “fiercely united”. During the race other runners kept asking me about my flower and I told them how my friend and neighbor was starting a women’s running movement, and the rest is history. I’ve been wearing a flower ever since!”

SHE Rocks, Rules, Runs: Running Through the Pain

04/21/2015 by fellowflowers Leave a Comment

Married to her high school sweetheart for the past 11 years, Kathy is a mother to two wildly active little boys, a 6-year-old named Travis and a 4-year-old named Emmett. An avid distance runner for over 10 years, Kathy has recently taken her distance running to the next level by competing in ultra-marathon races. Kathy holds running close to her heart because it has given her hope even in her darkest moments, when she thought her son may not live to see another day.

SHE Rocks, Rules, Runs: Purposefully Putting One Foot in Front of the Other

04/17/2015 by fellowflowers Leave a Comment

unnamedSHE rules because:

Lesa Newby is a wife, mother of two happy children, a three-year old girl and a six-year old boy (who happens to be autistic), a runner, a successful business owner and a lover of what results from motivation.  Lesa has a true passion for other people’s stories, what makes them move, what makes them happy and how she can help them.

She rules because she has never stopped running. At six months pregnant she was still hitting the pavement, bringing her baby bump along for the journey. Lesa was first introduced to Fellow Flowers at the Chicago Marathon Expo while she was six and a half months pregnant with her daughter. When a booth adorned with flowers caught her eye, her friend, Dave Mari said, “You have to meet these awesome flower girls!”. As soon as she met Mel and Tori, she felt an instant bond, a connection beyond just running. There was finally a symbol to display why she was running a full marathon pregnant, why she trained so hard and her “WHY” was found in a flower. And so began the journey she traveled the next three and a half years called…running.

  • Fellow Flowers and the FFCrew have taught me how to be relentlessly ME and enjoy every step of my journey. They have also given me the greatest gift: a sisterhood of women who support, encourage and love me every step of the way.
    Lacey, Truckee, CA
  • My journey to find my wings began with the gift of a yellow flower (and then a turquoise flower, and a red flower). This flower was given to me by one of the most motivating woman that I have ever met in my life. At the time I had no idea where this flower would take me. It wasn’t until I crossed the finish line of the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon last year, that I fully grasped the power of that flower. As soon as I crossed the finish line, I knew, in that moment, that I was GOOD ENOUGH, STRONG ENOUGH, and that I had finally found my wings.
    Kelly, Grand Haven, Michigan
  • Every time I head out for a run and clip that flower in I know that I am not alone.  When I am at a race and I see another flower on the course, I instantly feel connected to her without even knowing her name.  It is such an amazing feeling!  I love being an FFCrew member and sharing my love of Fellow Flowers with other runners that I meet. I feel so lucky and blessed to be a part of this incredible group of supportive women!
    Katie – Fort Campbell, KY
  • Fellow Flowers has introduced me to an amazing group of women whom I can connect with on so many levels. As a busy working mom it’s hard to juggle daily tasks and find time to do the one thing that makes me feel the best which is running. Sometimes I feel alone in the struggle, but Fellow Flowers and the FFCrew remind me that I am not alone. I always look forward to sharing my post-run smiling selfies with other flowers and cheering on those who do the same.
