The hats I wear
First, and foremost, I am a 35 year-old woman trying to be better every day I am the mother of two precious children, Owen and Isabel, and a stepmother to our beautiful 19 year old daughter, Natalie. They bring such joy to my life, and I am so very grateful for them. I am a wife, married to my BFF, the most genuine person I know. He is inherently good, love that. I can very much relate to being a carpool queen with an hour and 10 minute U.P. (=WINTER!!!) commute to work every day. For the past eleven years I have taught elementary school, teaching all grades 1st-4th. It is a very difficult job in many ways, and there are times when I feel overwhelmed, but in the end I know that I am making a positive impact in my students’ lives, and that makes it all worthwhile. And, I am extremely thankful for summers that I can spend with my family and friends, making memories and enjoying this one life we’ve got!
What makes your heart pound?
Whew…tough one. Hmm…well this one depends on perspective. My heart pounds when I think of something happening to my children. It pounds when I have to speak in front of adults…ugh, public speaking…students fine, adults nope! It pounds in those moments before a race…your head reeling…this is happening. It’s here. Go time…let’s do this! An authentic moment with a friend or my dear husband can also make my heart skip a beat.
What gets you up in the morning? What keeps you up at night?
Mornings: During the school year? The damn alarm clock! In the summers? With children, ages 4 and 2, who needs an alarm clock?
Nights: I am a self-confessed night owl. I spend my nights catching up with my husband, heading out with friends, working on crafty projects, correcting papers, surfing the web…damn you Pinterest! You name it, it could be my reason for staying up.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
DVR’d reality TV. Real Housewives of ________ wherever! The Bachelor and Bachelorette. Oh, and Gossip Girl…not TV, but love the idea of a Manhattan life filled with all the drama…hah! Grey’s too…OF COURSE. And, with DVR you can power through quickly!
What do you say to the woman who says she doesn’t think she can run?
Try…you’ll be amazed at what you can do. Get out of your own way.
How do you want the world to remember you?
Quite simply…as being authentic…someone who was kind and caring, loving and happy.
What running shoe are you most loyal to?
My current shoes are Mizuno, and I love them. Previously? Saucony, also quality shoes.
What’s your go-to flower color and why?
My go-to flower(s) bounce between dark pink and purple. Dark pink, before there was a purple, because I need to remind myself daily that I AM WORTHY. Purple, because it holds a special place in my heart, a great conversation with dear friends, Tori and Mel, helped to spawn the “doing it anyway” catch phrase. And don’t we all relate to life getting in the way…
Secret super power?
Projects. Artsy, crafty, creativity of any and all sorts. I just love to putz and try things out.
Who inspires you the most?
My mother. She has endured against so many odds, all the while instilling in us the importance of education, supporting us in all of our endeavors, and simply giving us unconditional love. She is the strongest woman I know and I am so grateful she is in my life.
What are the five words that best define you?
Evolving, sentimental, fun-loving….vulnerable, yet strong all at the same time.
Caffeinated beverage choice? And how often you do you need one?
Diet Coke (I know, bad), one a day, usually at lunch. I am a coffee girl too, but if I’m picking one…DC it is. On occasion that DC may, or may not, be mixed with something else (usually not at lunch)!
Oh, hard to pick one…hahaha…overall, I’d say rude people. Everyone has a bad day now and again, but I’m talking someone who is an ass to you, for no reason…an angry stranger. Then, there’s the teacher in me that cannot handle hearing people say, “I seen you at _______.” Or, when people say “irregardless”. Don’t do it!!! There is no “irregardless”.
Travel destination on this earth that’s calling your name?
Europe- Paris, France. Rome, Italy. Madrid, Spain. London, England…etc.
Why do you run?
Oh, so many reasons. To lose weight. To de-stress. To be with friends. To deal. To feel the accomplishment when finished. To sweat it out. To prove I can. To be better than myself.
The time of day that I love to run the most is…
Damn, do I want to be a morning runner. Every time I’ve done it, I’m so happy to have gotten it in, but being the night owl that I am, mornings are hard. I prefer a late afternoon/evening run…preferably cooler weather.
What’s the life lesson you want to pass on to your children?
To be kind to everyone, not always easy, not always gonna happen, but as often as you can, be kind to others. Everyone just wants to feel validated. Do not harbor hate or anger, it only hurts you in the end. I want them to know their self-worth, to let nobody else define it. I want them to love themselves, to believe in the goodness of others, and to laugh as often as possible.
First words that come to your mind when you think of crossing a finish line?
I did it! I f*#@$ng did it! Wooohoooooooo!
