You’ve read in “Our Story” about the number 13. Thirteen women responded … 13 miles. Perfect.
The irony isn’t only in the mileage and the number of women, it’s also in the fact that the race we were all running was on the weekend of Friday the 13th in May. It’s essentially the reason behind my idea of asking them to run – I was born on Friday, May 13th- proud and true. I love the number and even married a man who was also born on the 13th. In the past year and a half, I’ve noticed it everywhere! Or I’ve just paid attention more. The stories at times have been surreal, almost scary.
One week before this infamous race, I had ordered new shoes – Asics Nimbus. Always have worn them, new colors were out, and I needed a new pair. I pulled them out of the box, laced them up, looked down and screamed. There it was … the number 13 looking right back at me. It was their 13th edition. Of course. That day, I also reached my PR in that half marathon …in those shoes. (And I may have just bought a new pair of them last weekend.) 🙂
Amidst this race weekend celebration, I also attended the Michigan State Police graduation of a dear childhood friend. When I found out he was graduating on 5/13, reaching his life-long goal, I had to be there. While sitting and waiting for it to start, his mom leaned over and told me that he was born at 5:13 am. I smiled. Okay, now fast forward – just six months ago, my dad and his mom got married. He’s my friend and my family.
In 2012, the year Fellow Flowers started, there were three Friday the 13ths, 13 weeks apart!! (Kelly Ripa informed me of this when I was home on a snow day – on Friday, January 13th) This will never happen again in my lifetime. You can’t make this stuff up, people.
In taking this leap, I had to make the tough decision to resign from my previous job. After talking to my principal and informing her that I wasn’t coming back, I let her know that I was going to talk to my superintendent and hand in my letter the following day. She told me he was out of town and wouldn’t be back until Monday. So I walked in on Monday, August 13th and handed in my letter of resignation. 🙂
This one takes the cake. Last night, I previewed this beautiful website with a few of our Originals. Our time together is few and far between, but for some reason, last second, we were able to gather for a glass of champagne and a quick “read-through.” It got late…because that’s what always happens when we are together, and night turned into the morning. At 12:35 a.m., a cell phone rang. Monica looked down – it was her sister Durae calling. (Who, if you know her, is never awake at this time.) She is 38 weeks pregnant, and sure enough, on her way to the hospital.
She is one of our Originals. Bre (our Fellow Flower Ob-Gyn) grabs the phone, asks a few questions and gives the phone back to Monica. Bre grabs her own phone and then looks at me and says, “Do you know what the date is?” I didn’t…but knew very quickly. I take the phone, scream something to Durae about how excited I am that she’s having her baby on the 13th, and then I paused.
I suddenly realized that our website was going live on September 13th. Unplanned and unnoticed. I had chills to my core. I texted Mel. “Do you realize our website is going LIVE on the 13th?” She replied. “Ah, shit. Well … of course. My wedding anniversary too.” 🙂
I wear a necklace daily, given to me on my birthday from Sarah, another Original. It has 13.1 engraved in roman numerals on it -XIII.I- I just may have to tattoo it on me someday. With an orange flower close by.
Happy Birthday and welcome to the world, baby girl. You are the blessed lil’ bundle of an Original.
Happy Anniversary to Mel and Jason – nine years and counting.
Happy Fellow Flowers launch day and cheers to the number 13.
